If anyone ever discovered water, it was not a fish. Take the fish out of the water, though, and it begins to know what the water is like. There is a real danger.
Are we curious? Why?
Can we step out of the media for a moment to know what the media are to us?
Where are we, here and now, in our relation to the media? What shaped/ is shaping our knowing?
What is our reality?
What is our sphere of action in the world –
A witness? A wanderer? A documentarian? A filmmaker? A critic? A consumer? Or ALLATONCE?
Much has been said and written / rather reflected upon by those who dared or who had to. We will hear and read some. But before! May we pause for possible reflections as we prepare to navigate or construct the terrain of NEW MEDIA.
Objectives:
Create a baseline understanding of the contemporary media ecology we live inside.
Surface our / participants’ implicit media practices: habits, biases, & imaginations.
Initiate a reflective, critical stance toward media environments.
Begin to sense and articulate the dominant logics shaping our current media condition.
Decide a possible course of exposure to past developments, theories that propelled & masked practices.
Discover potential challenges to and new potentialities of “documentary practices” in a new media environment.
